The shotguns of the Western frontier used black powder.  When the commercial hunters went after the Buffalo herds in the 1870s they used guns like the .44-90 Sharp and the .44-90 Remington.  Technology was still relatively basic.  The theory was to use the maximum powder charge on the maximum caliber bullet.  Once the American Bison was hunted commercially for its hide, the vast herds were destroyed in less then 10 years.
